Offensive Content Statement

Historical materials contained in the Special Collections and Archives may include language, positions, and values that are considered outdated and offensive in today’s context. As a result of this, our finding aids and other archival description may reflect these outdated sentiments. When harmful or offensive language is generated by the creator of the materials, it is best practice to keep such language in the collection’s description to preserve the historical record and the cultural context of the materials’ creation.

We recognize that there are also collection descriptions written by library staff that may be outdated, problematic, and/or inaccurate. As we become aware of these descriptions, we are attempting to address this issue by updating terminology to be more respectful and inclusive. When such descriptions have been updated, we make note of the changes in the Processing Note of the description.
